As authors outside of the ‘mainstream’, we all face the difficulty of getting knowledge of the very existence of our work out to the people we are doing it for – readers.

Fellow author Stevie Turner has captured the dilemma precisely in her blog:

via Engaging With Readers

  1. Thanks for sharing, Frank. I commented on Stevie’s blog, but would like to add here that we shouldn’t discard the connections we make with readers (whether authors or not) on online platforms.

Yes, writer/authors need to develop those social skills… I contacted a favourite author a couple of years back to thank him (it was a ‘him’ in this case) via email, per the recommendation at the end of the novel, and I got a very dismissive reply – no attempt to engage at all. I would have, at the very least, said, ‘Gee, wish I wasn’t so busy but all I can say is ‘thank you for reading and I’m glad you enjoyed it.’ That reminds me that I’ve only read one book from that author since, and it was an add-on to someone else’s unfinished work and I was just curious how it would end… Yes, authors need to come out of the closet, “for the times, they are a-changing”.
